Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF) Funds A Unique and Unprecedented Mesothelioma Study In Montana
Almost half the residents of Libby, Montana have signed-up to participate in a study to calibrate a new test for the detection of mesothelioma.
Mesothelial cells produce certain soluble proteins into the bloodstream, and those proteins can be detected. There appears to be a positive correlation between the presence of a soluble protein called soluble mesothelin related protein (SMRP) and mesothelioma cancer.
Why have so many Libby residents agreed to participate? Well, Libby, Montana has one of the highest rates of pleural mesothelioma in United States (The W.R. Grace Company used to mine asbestos in Libby, as the area had a massive deposit of asbestos.)
